Dr. Langer’s work revolves around the education, development and mentoring of the up and coming generation of IT staff, as well as continuing education at the graduate level for experienced IT professionals on track to advance up the ranks to CIO and beyond.
A key component of Dr. Langer’s approach to education – at all levels – is the importance of mentoring individuals, not only in their field of study, but also on a strategic and inter-personal level. It is this method put into practice that makes Dr. Langer’s programs and workshops so valuable and ultimately, what helps make his students successful.
As the Academic Director of Columbia’s Executive Master of Science in Technology Management, Dr. Langer is the architect of the curriculum that is designed to prepare students to become Executives and enter the C-Suite. The curriculum blends traditional classroom instruction and workshop with the more unique program elements of one-to-one mentoring and a Masters project including a series of oral presentations and defenses to professors and CIOs.
Dr. Langer is committed to advancing the IT profession and focuses much of his attention on leadership coaching for senior IT professionals. It is the fusion of his business insight and ability to articulate the business value of technology, along with the ability to view the ultimate goals of a corporation, that make Dr. Langer’s counsel to C-level executives so valuable. His work continues to evolve in this direction as he endeavors to teach technology professionals how to become strategic thinkers – become the drivers of the business, not the supporters of it – and ultimately, lead the strategic future of their organizations.
Workforce Opportunity Services, was founded by Dr. Langer to achieve two important goals: to help young adults from low-income and undeserved populations learn marketable technology skills and become professionally, personally and financially independent; and to build a pipeline for the next generation of IT professionals and business leaders.
The WOS program initially launched in 2005 with the first class graduating from Columbia’s SLICE program in 2007. The program has since been replicated at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ and is under construction in Akron, OH and El Paso, TX. Today, more than 200 students have been enrolled in the WOS program with most graduates winning successful full-time positions with their sponsoring companies.
